Celebrities in spotlight at USC Library

The question of whether celebrities make good role models will be hotly debated at the University of the Sunshine Coast Library on Friday 17 November at 1pm.

University academics and invited guests, including award-winning journalist and radio celebrity Samille Muirhead of HOT 91 FM, will be panellists for the debate which will offer some light relief for USC students who finished exams this week.

Samille has been a journalism tutor at USC, previously worked for Seven Local News and last year won the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance’s award for state regional journalism.

Library resources and technologies manager Catherine Brown said a debate was held annually to commemorate the official opening of the library in 1997. This year’s event will be called the Power of Ten Debate to celebrate the University’s first decade.

"The objective of the debate is to involve the main clients of the library – academics and students – to help us celebrate,’’ she said.

"It helps to highlight and to focus the library as a major part of the University without it being too serious . . . so we usually have a frivolous topic.’’

Ms Brown said past topics have included "Are computers better than sex?", "Does wisdom come with age?" and "Is beauty better than brains?".

About 80-100 spectators are expected to attend the debate on the ground floor of the Library.

"There also will be some guest celebrities in the audience, so you never know who’s going to turn up,’’ she said.
