USC specialises its research activities in the areas of sustainability and genecology.

These themes are addressed through individual and collaborative academic research, the efforts of many of USC's higher degree by research students, and the University's research centres and groups. 

All research at USC is known as Coast Research, denoting the coastal nature of USC's region, linking with the University's name. It also refers to the University's Open Access to research outputs which are available through the Coast Research Database.
