Areas of research strengths

Brendan Burkett assessing cyclist's performance

Research within the Centre for Healthy Activities, Sport and Exercise (CHASE) is undertaken in one of two complementary areas of research strengths:

1. Preventative health and rehabilitation - through physical activity, exercise, dietary intake and cognitive strategies.

2. understanding and enhancing sports performance

These research strengths are multidisciplinary, and engage a broad sector of the community in research that is relevant to the Sunshine Coast, and national and international communities.

The discipline knowledge base in CHASE is drawn from the expertise in the following research areas:

Sport science

Sport science involves a range of disciplines such as biomechanics, exercise physiology, nutrition, exercise prescription and programming. All of these disciplines are taught and researched at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Sport science applies the knowledge from these disciplines to assess and analyse the human body's response to physical activity. Research in sport science can be broadly grouped into sports performance enhancement, exercise prescription for rehabilitation and health, and the application of this research into coaching.

Health promotion

Community health and wellbeing are dependent on the interaction of a range of factors that promote and protect good health and wellbeing, and prevent illness and injury within communities and the general population. These include biological and behavioural factors of people in the community, and the biophysical and socio-economic environments in which they live, work and play. Activities that enhance community health and wellbeing include health promotion, health protection, and health surveillance and monitoring.

Biomedicine and biotechnology

Biomedical science encompasses a range of rapidly expanding areas such as a comprehensive understanding of healthy human functioning, therapeutic drug development and registration, biotechnology applications, food production and safety, nutrition, immunology, infectious disease and pharmacology.

Marketing and management

Marketing plays a pivotal role in the success of any business or organisation as it concerns the management of demand. At its foundation, marketing activity establishes contact with stakeholders and incorporates the building of relationships. Managing relationships is the crux of successful marketing, whether the organisation is a manufacturer, retailer, service organisation, not-for-profit organisation, or sporting club. Marketing acquires and disseminates knowledge about consumer behaviour, advertising and promotions, strategy, research and relationships.
