The Committee is responsible for promoting the ethical conduct of research and teaching involving the use of animals and protecting the wellbeing and welfare of those animals. The Committee reports to the Research Management Committee, the University Council and the National Health and Medical Research Council.

Before conducting research that involves the care and use of animals, applicants must submit an application and receive approval from the Animal Ethics Committee.

The application process

To begin the application process for Animal Ethics approval, applicants must read and become familiar with the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes. The Committee assesses applications using the Code as the standard for evaluating applications.

Each application is assessed to determined whether it is for the use of animals in teaching activities or for the use of animals in research. Applicants should complete the relevant application form:

  • Application for Ethics Approval for Use of Animals in Teaching
  • Application for Ethics Approval for Use of Animals in Research

Application forms can be obtained from the Secretary, Animal Ethics Committee.

The application form and all relevant attachments (as required in the application form) are submitted to the Secretary, Animal Ethics Committee.

Application submission

Although applications can be submitted at any time, they must be received at least 14 days prior to an Animal Ethics Committee meeting to enable that application to be accessed by the Committee. Applications received less than 14 days prior to the next Committee meeting will be held for the following meeting.
