John Mendoza

John recently established ConNetica Consulting after a career that has seen him hold several senior positions including Chief Executive Officer of the Mental Health Council of Australia and Chief Executive of the Australian Sports Drug Agency. He is also presently Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Health, Education and Science at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

His expertise in public policy development, advocacy, leadership and organisational transformation is sought by a range of clients in the public and not-for-profit sectors.

As CEO of the MHCA, John played a lead role in the development and execution of the political strategy to engage all Australian governments (Federal, states and territories) to commit to the reform of mental health services through the Council of Australian Governments. During his time at MHCA, the national peak body representing the mental health sector, John led the transformation of the Constitution and Board restructuring.

Council Chair, Honourable Rob Knowles AO, states “John has provided a magnificent contribution to the development of the Council and mental health in Australia. His tireless and dedicated leadership resulted in unprecedented attention being given to mental health issues, including the issue being taken up as a priority by COAG. John deserves a lot of credit for the additional resources and programs mental health is receiving from the federal, state and territory governments. John Mendoza’s leadership in the restructure of the Council and recruitment of high quality professional staff means the MHCA is well placed to continue to advocate effectively on behalf of people with a mental illness in Australia and represent the interests of the mental health sector”.

Prior to John’s term as Chief Executive of the Mental Health Council, he was the CEO of the Australian Sports Drug Agency, a Commonwealth Statutory Authority, from November 2000 and from February 1996, the Deputy CEO of ASDA. In these roles, John played a lead role in the Australian and international anti-doping programs leading up to the Sydney Olympics and the development of the World Anti-Doping Agency and World Anti-Doping Code. His efforts significantly contributed to Australia’s respected status in international sport.

John has authored or co-authored a number of major reports and submissions to public inquiries, most notably the seminal report on mental health care in Australia, Not For Service.

In 2002, John was awarded the Queensland University of Technology, Vice-Chancellor’s Outstanding Alumni Award for Innovation and Excellence. He was also awarded the Faculty of Health’s 2002 Outstanding Alumni Award.

We are delighted John is able to join us to deliver the keynote address at our second annual University Research Conference at USC in 2007.
