HECS-HELP
Commonwealth supported students make contributions to the cost of their education. Costs will depend on the individual courses chosen. There are three ways students can pay their student contribution:
- pay their student contribution up front
- receive a HECS-HELP loan for their full student contribution
- pay some of their student contribution up front and receive a HECS-HELP loan for the balance of their student contribution
If a student receives a HECS-HELP loan, they begin making repayments on that loan when their annual income reaches the minimum repayment threshold.
Students receive a 20 percent discount calculated on the amount paid if they pay A$500 or more of their student contribution up front.
Who is eligible?
Australian citizens and holders of a permanent humanitarian visa are eligible for HECS-HELP assistance. Other permanent visa holders and New Zealand citizens are not eligible for a HECS-HELP loan if they commenced study in 2005 or later and must pay their student contribution up front without a discount. If study was commenced before 2005 they may be eligible for HECS-HELP assistance subject to meeting eligibility requirements.
