University-wide postgraduate scholarships

Computer Games Scholarships

The University of the Sunshine Coast is seeking applications for two PhD Research Scholarships in Computer Gaming commencing 2009

PhD project 1: Development of a computer game to teach environmental management (cf SimCity). The game will integrate with existing climate modelling systems to provide educational tools for schools through to government. The PhD candidate will receive a stipend valued at $25,000 per annum as part of the Smart Forest Alliance Queensland partnership. Value: $25,000 per annum tax free. Relocation assistance is also available.
Commencement: ASAP
Duration: Three years full-time

PhD project 2: Development of a computer game to teach safety awareness skills and strategies to children to prevent them from becoming victims of child sexual abuse. The computer game can include console, desktop, mobile and multiplayer environments. The PhD candidate will receive a stipend valued at $25,000 per annum as part of the Telstra Foundation / Queensland Police Service / Daniel Morcombe Foundation project in partnership with Education Queensland and the Department of Child Safety.  For more information, download the Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Scholarship - Call for Expressions of Interest (PDF 70KB)

The projects will be supervised by Dr Christian Jones at USC. Dr Jones has worked with commercial games developers including Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and has developed automotive Serious Games with Stanford University (US), Ford (US) and Toyota (Japan).

Australian Postgraduate Awards

Eligibility: Applicants must have Australian citizenship or be permanent residents of Australia and plan to undertake their degree full time. Priority will be given to applicants

  • who have completed an Honours degree or equivalent with a first class result, or completed a Masters by research
  • who have a record of refereed research publication
  • whose research aligns with one of the University’s research centres, groups, clusters or areas of concentration.
  • whose research proposal clearly demonstrates significance and innovation

Value: A$20,427 per annum tax free (2009 rate)
Closing date: Applications for 2009 are now closed. Applications for 2010 close in October 2009 (this date is subject to change).

Awards are available for a period of two years for a master level research degree and three years for doctoral research degrees. This award offers a tax-free living allowance (indexed annually) and support for relocation and thesis production.

Rotary Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies

Eligibility: Postgraduate students who have completed their undergraduate degree at USC and have commenced master or doctoral level study at USC.
Value: A$2,500 each

These scholarships were established in 2001 by the Rotary Clubs of the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. Scholarships are awarded annually by the Deans to one postgraduate student in each University of the Sunshine Coast faculty. There are no application forms for these scholarships as awards are made on the Deans' nominations.

International Postgraduate Research Scholarships

International Postgraduate Research Scholarship

Eligibility: Higher degree by research applicants must satisfy the entry requirements for the proposed degree, including the English proficiency requirements, and must be a citizen of a country other than Australia and New Zealand. Applicants must also meet international student visa requirements as specified by the Department of Immigration, including the requirement to purchase and maintain a standard overseas Student Health Cover policy approved by the Commonwealth Government Department of Health and Ageing. Priority will be given to applicants

  • who have completed an Honours degree or equivalent with a first class result, or completed a Masters by research
  • who have a record of refereed research publication
  • whose research aligns with one of the University’s research centres, groups, clusters or areas of concentration.
  • whose research proposal clearly demonstrates significance and innovation

Value: the annual course cost for the successful applicant's program and the cost of a standard Overseas Student Health Cover policy.
Closing date: Applications for 2009 are now closed.
Application form: Applicants must first complete the Application for Admission to a Higher Degree by Research – International. To apply for the scholarship, applicants must also submit the IPRS application attachment. International Postgraduate Research Scholarship IPRS application attachment (Word 248KB).

Awards are available for a period of two years for a master level research degree and three years for doctoral research degrees.

IDP Student Mobility Scholarships

Eligibility: Available to international students wishing to undertake postgraduate research in an Australian university in 2010. Students must be nominated by an Australian university in order to receive a Student Mobility Scholarship. Australian universities will be provided with nomination materials in 2009.
Value: A$5,000 per scholarship.
Closing date: Applications for study in 2009 have now closed. Applications for study in 2010 will be announced in September 2009.

CSIRO Postgraduate Scholarships

CSIRO offers full and top-up three year postgraduate scholarships to high quality students who are enrolled in a PhD at an Australian university. Top-up scholarships are available to those doctoral students who gain or expect to gain an Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) or equivalent university award. Full scholarships may also be available. CSIRO's National Research Flagship Program also offers full and top-up scholarships.

Eligibility: Recipients of postgraduate scholarships are generally required to be Australian citizens or have permanent residency status. However, in fields in which there is a national skill shortage, scholarships may be awarded to overseas candidates provided they are prepared to seek permanent residency during the studentship.

Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarships

Fulbright Postgraduate Scholarships are available to Australian citizens to engage in 8 – 12 months of research relevant to an Australian PhD; or undertake an approved course of study in an American higher degree or its equivalent. These scholarships are aimed at current PhD students, honours students, or honours graduates who are considering postgraduate study in the U.S.

Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University Graduate School 2009 Full Scholarships

There will be full scholarship opportunities available for academically exceptional individuals to study at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University Graduate School for 2-year graduate programs starting in 2009. Please note that this is not an exchange program. It is a full graduate program to be carried out at the University. Important details of the scholarship program and how to apply are as follows:

Scholarship benefits: All university fees, an allowance for living expenses and airfare will be provided.
Semester to enroll: Fall (September) 2009
Required application fee: 5,000 yen or US$49
