These sessions are intended for students requiring further advice from their faculty about their program and enrolment before Orientation. There will also be an opportunity to access support to enrol online. Enabling courses

Enabling courses will help you acquire basic knowledge and skills in communication, chemistry, mathematics, biology and statistics, as well as providing a solid basis for USC studies. They begin with an intensive one-week or two-week program before commencement of the degree programs, and follow up with a weekly session to support semester studies. Students lacking proficiency in senior level chemistry, mathematics, writing skills, biology, statistics or physics are strongly advised to enrol in the appropriate enabling courses before the start of semester.

Register through SOLAR.

Cost for enabling courses is:

  • free of charge to Commonwealth-supported students
  • free of charge for Australian and New Zealand citizens and holders of a permanent resident visa enrolled on a fee-paying basis
  • A$1,500 per course for students on an international student visa

Registration for any enabling course must be completed on SOLAR. Students are provided with course outlines, and need to bring pen, paper, ruler and scientific calculator. Attendance at all sessions is recommended.

This course enables students to acquire basic knowledge in the principles of cell biology. The course helps students to better undertake study in first year university-level biology courses and the course is specifically designed for students who have not taken high school biology, or who have done so but wish to refresh their knowledge and understanding of the discipline.

This course particularly benefit students enrolled in Cell Biology (SCI103) and Human Physiology (LFS112). It begins as a one-week pre-semester intensive course and continues as weekly tutorials for the remainder of semester.

7–11 July 1–4pm Enabling Maths (ENB102)
This course is designed to upgrade the mathematical skills of students entering academic programs at USC. An understanding of, and an ability to apply, basic maths concepts is an essential skill for all science, health, education and business students.

The course particularly benefits students enrolling in Economics for Business (BUS102) and Chemistry (SCI105) and Introduction to Mathematics (MTH101). It begins as a one-week pre-semester intensive (three hours per day) and continues as weekly tutorials for the remainder of semester.

Students undertaking Physics (SCI107) who need to upgrade their knowledge of mathematical operations and basic physics concepts are strongly encouraged to attend.

This course helps you acquire basic knowledge of the principles of chemistry, enabling you to study first-year university Chemistry (SCI105) and related disciplines.

Enabling Chemistry is taught over a period of ten days (three hours per day) prior to the start of semester and continues as weekly tutorials for the remainder of semester.

Free transition courses and workshops

These interactive workshops can help you meet other students, and build on a number of useful skills for university study to make a successful transition to university life.

Also available is a unique course designed for our international students to introduce them to the academic requirements of study at USC.

As well as the courses listed below, a non-academic Return to Study Session for mature age students is being held on Saturday 9 August 9am–12noon. To book for this session, complete the return to study form and return it to Student Services.

Note: academic skills workshops, IT skills tutorials and Library tutorials also run during semester. Contact Student Services and the Library for more Information.

7–11 July 9am–12noon Academic Writing and Study Skills-Intensive Course.
This intensive five-day course provides students with the opportunity to gain specific skills and strategies needed to meet the challenges of university study. Topics covered include time management, reading and note-taking, essay and report writing, how to avoid plagiarising and critical thinking. Students need to bring a pen and paper. Worksheets and booklets are provided. Attendance at all sessions is recommended.

Students must register to secure a place. Please complete the academic writing form and return it to Student Services.

Enrolment in Enabling Writing Skills (ENB106) is highly recommended to further develop writing skills.

7–11 July 1–4pm Computer Basics for Beginners Course.
This is a practical, hands-on course that teaches basic word processing skills required to present assignments using Microsoft Word. The course provides 15 hours of training across five sessions before the start of the semester. Students are provided with a Computer Basics workbook. Attendance at all five sessions is recommended.

Students must register to secure a place. Please complete the computer basics form and return it to Student Services.

Additional computer skills workshops will be run throughout the semester to develop students' computing skills.

8–10 July 6–8pm Proofreading for Tertiary Study Course.
This six-hour course aims to teach proofreading techniques and the background knowledge of sentence structure and punctuation needed to proofread. Proofreading is the last stage of the writing process and the last chance to correct errors in written work. Bring pen, paper and a dictionary to the course. Attendance on all three days is recommended.

Students must register to secure a place. Please complete the proofreading form and return it to Student Services.

International students

The following sessions are essential for international students. In addition to all of the Orientation social activities, international students are encouraged to attend Welcome Day on Monday 14 July. International students are also encouraged to attend all other Orientation sessions, particularly the relevant STARTSMART sessions and dedicated Academic Skills Session.

Assignment Writing @ USC is a course designed specifically for international students. This 6 hour course looks at written assignment expectations.  You can attend this course during Orientation week or during the first 4 weeks of semester to gain knowledge about what is needed in order to meet the academic requirements at USC.  To register for this course, complete the assignment writing @USC form and return to Student Services. Headstart Orientation - compulsory for new Headstart students

Stay at the University's research and education facility at Dilli Village for two nights.

Activities can include bushwalking on some of the island's Great Walks trails, visiting freshwater lakes, fishing swimming and bird-watching. Meet some of your lecturers and find out more about your program. All students are welcome to attend this optional activity.

Cost of A$160 includes the bus travel to Rainbow Beach, 4WD bus to Dilli Village, barge transfers, accommodation, linen and food. Limited places are available. To confirm a place please complete the registration form and return it to Student Services.
