A variety of academic skills services are available to you to help you adapt to a new learning envornment and make a successful transition to university study.

Pre-orientation courses

Activity Day/Time Session Venue
Academic Writing and Study Skills Intensive Course 13–17 July
9am–12noon
Learn skills to meet the challenges of university study in this intensive five-day course. Topics include time management, reading and note-taking, essay and report writing, and critical thinking. You will need a pen and paper. Worksheets and booklets are provided. Attendance at all sessions is recommended.

Register for this session. Complete the Academic Writing and Study Skills Registration Form (PDF 92KB) and return it to Student Services.

Enrolment in Enabling Writing Skills (ENB106) is also highly recommended to further develop writing skills.

Computer Basics for Beginners Course 13–17 July
1–4pm
This course is designed for students with limited or no experience with computers. It is a practical, hands-on course teaching basic word processing skills required to present assignments using Microsoft Word. The course provides 15 hours of training over 5 sessions before the start of semester. Students are provided with a computer basics workbook. Attendance at all sessions is recommended.

Proofreading for Tertiary Study Course 14–16 July
6–8pm
This six-hour course (held over three days) aims to teach proofreading techniques and give background knowledge of sentence structure and punctuation needed to proofread successfully. Attendance at all sessions is recommended.

Enabling courses—Tertiary Enabling Program (TEP) 13 July (commences) Learn new university-specific skills and refresh your knowledge in subject areas such as chemistry, maths, writing and computer literacy with an enabling course. Various

Orientation

USC’s Orientation program packs a lot of what you need to know to be ready for your first year of university into a week of social and academic activities. Improve your academic writing or computer skills, learn your way around the campus, join in some social activities and meet staff and fellow students—there are plenty of activities, all aimed at helping you settle in to university life.

This informal and interactive session is designed for mature age students returning to formal education after a period of absence. Identify, explore and discuss issues relevant to returning to study and learn from other students' experiences.

Academic Writing and Study Skills Workshops Throughout semester Academic writing and study skills workshops run for one to two-hours and cover areas such as essay and report writing. They are held weekly throughout the semester and are free of charge for students.

A timetable of academic writing and study skills workshops is available from the first day of Welcome Week and also on the USC Portal. Select 'Academic skills' under 'My organisations', then 'Study skills', 'Academic skills workshop timetable'.

This course is for international students only. It covers assignment expectations with a focus on using and acknowledging evidence appropriately, using academic style and the difference between essays and reports.
