Academic skills services

A variety of academic skills services are available to you to help you adapt to a new learning environment and make a successful transition to university study.

Workshops and events

Pre-semester skills preparation courses Week prior to Orientation Academic writing and study skills intensive course
This intensive course provides you with an opportunity to develop the specific skills and strategies needed to meet the challenge of university study. Topics covered include time management, reading and notetaking; essay and report writing and critical thinking. Proof reading for tertiary study
This course will help you gain the skills required for editing academic writing. It covers basic rules of grammar, paragraph and sentence structure and paraphrasing and editing techniques. Proofreading for tertiary study registration form, semester 1, 2010 (PDF 111KB)

Computer basics for beginners
This course is designed for students with very limited or no experience with computers. Practical and hands-on, it will teach you the basic word processing skills required to present assignments using Microsoft Word. The course provides training prior to the commencement of the semester and on completion of the course, you will be able to create, save, open, close, format and edit documents, set up pages and margins and print documents. Assignment writing @ USC for international students course
During Orientation, or during the first four weeks of semester Assignment writing @ USC for international students
This course is specifically designed for international students. It covers academic requirements for assignments at USC with topics including essay and report writing, academic style, protocols and expectations, using evidence appropriately and avoiding plagiarism. Enabling courses—Tertiary Enabling Program (TEP) Throughout semester Learn new university-specific skills and refresh your knowledge in subject areas such as chemistry, maths, writing and computer literacy with an enabling course.
Academic writing and study skills workshops Throughout semester Academic writing and study skills workshops run for one to two-hours and cover areas such as essay and report writing. They are held weekly throughout the semester and are free of charge.  Students do not need to register for these workshops.

USC Portal. Select 'Academic skills' under 'My organisations', then 'Study skills', 'Academic skills workshop timetable'.
Library information tutorials Check the Library webpages Library information tutorials are held throughout semester to make your research more effective.

Academic skills advisers are there to help you if you are experiencing difficulty with tertiary study at any time. Individual or group consultations are available. Contact Student Services to make an appointment.
