2009 Indigenous Education Symposium

12–15 October 2009

The University of the Sunshine Coast hosted the third annual Indigenous Education Symposium in the week beginning 12 October 2009.

The vision for the symposium was to facilitate understanding between Indigenous Australians and the broader community, whilst still addressing contemporary issues in Indigenous education. The event offered benefits for all professionals and community members engaging with Indigenous Australians with symposium participants gaining:

  • increased competence in understanding Indigenous cultures
  • knowledge of existing protocols for working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • an overview of the history of Indigenous people in Australia and how it impacts on efficacy in education and other professions

Speakers

Keynote speaker: Professor Yvonne Cadet-James

Professor Yvonne Cadet-James is a Gugu Badhun woman from the Valley of Lagoons in North Queensland. Professor Cadet-James is the Chair of Indigenous Australian Studies at James Cook University and Chancellor of the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education.

In her keynote address, Yvonne presented the work being done through the Empowerment Research Program by a team of researchers from James Cook University and the University of Queensland in partnership with groups and communities. The work focuses on the delivery and evaluation of the Family Wellbeing Program, an empowerment program developed by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for their own people. The aim of the program is to provide people with the knowledge, confidence and skills to bring about positive change in their lives which in turn impacts on families and communities.
