Indigenous cadetship and employment (NICP)

The National Indigenous Cadetship Project (NICP) is an employment project funded by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations.

The project aims to match Indigenous undergraduate students with employers who have relevance to university studies.

A dedicated Indigenous Cadetship and Employment Officer is available at the University of the Sunshine Coast to assist Indigenous students to gain a cadetship or employment.

Cadetship

Cadetship benefits include:

  • 12 weeks paid work placement per annum relating to the student's study discipline
  • A$12,000 per annum to study
  • A$500 per semester allowance for books, fees or other study related expenses
  • increased employment opportunities upon graduation
Eligibility

To be eligible for a cadetship, students must:

  • be enrolled full-time in their first undergraduate degree
  • identify as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent

Employment

The Indigenous Cadetship and Employment Officer can assist Indigenous students who discontinue, defer or graduate from their studies to find employment.

Assistance includes:

  • resume building
  • creating covering letters
  • searching for suitable positions
  • addressing selection criteria
  • career guidance
