What are graduate programs?
Completing a Bachelor degree can make you eligible to apply for positions through Graduate Programs. These are usually offered by Commonwealth and State Government as well as large private sector companies, and are highly competitive and well-paid opportunities. These programs generally run over a year, and provide you with training and professional development while being rotated through different areas and responsibilities of the organisation. You will be required to apply for a permanent position with the organisation towards the end of the graduate program year.
To find out about these programs, grab a Graduate Futures book from careerconnection. Online information can be found at Graduate Careers Australia, a website entirely for graduate careers and graduate opportunities.
You can also research by having a look at the website of a company or government department of interest for their recruitment procedures.

I know what job I want, but there are no jobs advertised in my field. What should I do?
You will need to employ a strategic approach to research positions that are not advertised. An informational interview is an excellent way for a new graduate to achieve information about careers and unearth hidden or non-advertised positions. The basic objectives are to:
- find out more about careers and industries directly from the employer
- network with potential employers
- practice your communication and networking skills
- present yourself, your qualifications and knowledge to a potential employer
- unearth hidden or non-advertised jobs
Make an appointment to see a Careers and Graduate Employment Officer for advice on conducting informational interviews, or check out the resources in careerconnection, Ground Floor, Building J.
