Preparing for the Careers Fair: Your future starts now

Before a Careers Fair

  • Check the list of companies attending the Careers Fair.
  • Research the organisations that interest you to gain some background knowledge on what they are seeking from their employees.
  • Remember that most information about a company is available on their website - do not ask for information you could have found out for yourself.
  • Prepare your résumé to take with you to the Careers Fair. The Careers and Graduate Employment Officers in careerconnection can help you with proofreading and checking your résumé.
  • Prepare a list of questions to ask organisations.
  • Plan how you will introduce yourself to the organisation representatives so that you will make a positive first impression. Think of a short introduction including your name, degree, and details.

At the Careers Fair

  • It is important that you make a good first impression: be confident - smile, make eye contact, use a firm handshake, ask pertinent questions and make sure you are sufficiently well-informed.
  • Dress for success! Look professional - you might be a future employee!
  • Take a notepad and pen so that you can take notes on important information or schedule interviews.
  • Make the most of this event by talking to as many organisations as you can that recruit from your chosen area of study.
  • Make your conversations with employers worthwhile and short – do not spend time asking irrelevant questions. Be aware that other students also want to talk with them. Listen to what the organisation representative says, especially for information which could be of assistance to you when you are writing your application.
  • When you have finished your conversation, shake their hand and thank them for their time. Ask if you can leave your résumé and request a business card (If they have no card to offer - make a note of their name and position in the organisation for future reference).
  • Do not just go around collecting “freebies” from each organisation – show interest in the company.
  • Allow yourself plenty of time and do not arrive right at closing time.

After a Careers Fair

  • Read through the information that you have collected.
  • Decide which programs/organisations to apply for.
  • Make a note of any closing dates to ensure that you do not miss any.
  • Initiate any further communication requested from the organisations.
  • Meet with a Careers and Graduate Employment Officer in careerconnection for assistance with your application and any further career guidance that you may require.
