Test information

You can be sure that an IELTS score demonstrates your true ability to communicate in English across all four language skills - Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The real life authenticity gives you a personal and valid indicator of just how good you really are!

  • The IELTS test is in four components: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
    • The Listening, Reading and Writing components of the test take approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete. The speaking component takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.
  • IELTS is available in two formats: Academic and General Training.
    • The Academic modules assess whether a candidate is ready to study or train at degree level.
    • The General Training modules are suitable for candidates who are going to undertake non academic training or for immigration purposes. Please go to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship website for more information.
  • Test results will be sent to candidates 13 days after the test in a Test Report Form (TRF).
    • Candidates will be awarded a score for each individual component and an overall test score. The test is scored from non user (0) to Expert (9).
    • TRF's will be released by post or, if arranged beforehand, can be collected in person. Results cannot be released by telephone or email.
    • If candidates choose to have their TRF's sent to them by post, the University will not take responsiblity for their secure arrival unless a self addressed, registered post envelope is supplied on the test day.
  • There are no restrictions on candidates re-taking the test.
  • For more information on the IELTS test please go to the IELTS website.
