Program overview

The International Foundation Pathway (IFP) is a foundation pathway for students who do not meet USC’s English language or academic entry requirements.

Successful completion of the following courses (or subjects) over one full-time semester, enables IFP students direct entry into most USC undergraduate programs:

  • IFP101 Academic English — 19 weeks (10 hours face-to-face teaching per week), and
  • two foundation-level courses — TPP101 Academic Skills for Success and TPP102 Computer Literacy, and
  • one of the following courses:

IFP students must achieve at least a Pass grade in each of the three foundation-level courses and a grade of Satisfactory in Academic English.

Please note that there is no advanced standing towards a University award program on the basis of completed International Foundation Pathway studies.

Class schedule

The English language component of the International Foundation Pathway - IFP101 Academic English - is taught consecutively over 19 weeks.

The three other International Foundation Pathway courses - course codes beginning with TPP - are scheduled to fit within the standard academic calendar dates, representing 13 teaching weeks.

IFP101 Academic English, will commence in Week One of the semester and will be taught continuously through the semester, including during scheduled semester breaks and exam periods. IFP101 will finish after the official semester end date.

The requirement for 19 weeks of English study within the International Foundation Pathway is to provide the best possible opportunity to achieve the English result needed to progress to further study.

Program entry requirements

To gain entry to the IFP, students must have English proficiency of IELTS 5.5 (with no less than 5 on any subtest), or equivalent.
