Arrival and Orientation

Play orientation videoWe aim to make your adjustment to life at USC as easy and enjoyable as possible. A range of services are available to help including Orientation.

Arrival and preparation 

  • Transfers—Airport transfers can be booked online or arranged through Accommodation Services.
  • Welcome Pack - USC will supply you with a welcome pack during Orientation. This will include:
    • maps of the campus and local area
    • an orientation program
    • a Welcome Guide to the University and local area
    • bus timetables and other important information
  • Academic skills programs—learn about academic requirements and develop the skills you need for study at USC. Assignment Writing at USC for International Students is a free session that all international students should plan to attend. 
  • Enabling courses—learn new skills, refresh your knowledge, and increase your potential for excellent results in your undergraduate degree program.
  • Update your Australian address details using USCCentralUSC's online access to your personal and enrolment details. *

* It is a requirement of your visa that you advise USC with your on-arrival address and any changes to your address within seven days.

Orientation 

Semester 2 Orientation week is held from 20–24 July 2009. Familiarise yourself with the local area, campus, student support services, academic expectations and requirements at Orientation. It is a great way to meet other students and staff and get all the information you need to get started at USC.

Orientation is compulsory for all new students, so make arrangements to arrive on the Sunshine Coast before Orientation is due to start.

Orientation timetable – all students

Join in with a range of Orientation activities for all students including important academic and social events. Use the all student orientation timetable to plan your Orientation Week.

International students are particularly encouraged to attend the following events. They provide a great way to make new friends, explore the local area and begin your Australian experience:

Monday 20 July - compulsory sessions for international students

International Student Registration 8.30–10am Compulsory registration for international students. Bring your passport and e-visa details. Brasserie courtyard
International Student Welcome and Information Session 10.30am–12noon This orientation session provides information about the university, visas, OSHC and other essential information. LT1 and LT2 (video linked), Building K
Lunch 12noon–1pm Bring your lunch to the Brasserie courtyard and meet fellow students. Brasserie courtyard
Studying at USC Session 1–2pm Academic skills advice and information for International students. LT7 (Study Abroad and Exchange students), Building C
LT6 (undergraduate and postgraduate students), Building K
Study Abroad and Exchange Students Session 2–2.30pm A specific session for Study Abroad and Exchange students. LT7, Building C

Sport activities

2.30–4pm Fun sports with free BBQ and refreshments. Sports Stadium
Tuesday 21 July

Study in English
(Non-English speaking background students)
10am–12noon Interactive workshop for non-English speaking background students. Learn how to manage the challenges of tertiary study in English. LT7, Building C
Assignment Writing for International Students - Information session 1-2pm Understand what is expected of a written assignment submitted at USC. This session will provide an overview of what will be covered in - Assignment Writing @ USC for International Students. LT7, Building C

Wednesday 22 July

Referencing for International students 3–4pm Introduction to the Harvard Referencing System used at USC and information on how to avoid plagiarism. LT7, Building C

Assignment Writing @ USC for International Students
(Course A)

Session 1
9am–1pm

Session 2
3pm-5pm

Learn what is expected of a written assignment. This course includes:

  • using and acknowledging evidence appropriately
  • using academic style
  • the difference between essays and reports

To register complete the Assignment Writing @ USC for International Students Registration Form (PDF 64KB) and return it to Student Services.
