About the Gallery
The USC Art Gallery opened to the public as a dedicated gallery in May 2004.
Although an interim gallery had existed as part of the Library since 1998, the current gallery was designed as a public exhibition space or Category A Gallery with consideration for lighting, environmental conditions, storage and delivery area.
The Gallery is situated in the heart of the University campus, with more than half of the annual attendance considered educational visitors (USC students and staff, U3A, TAFE, primary and high school students).
The Gallery hosts a range of innovative and stimulating exhibitions focusing on contemporary art and design practice. The annual exhibition program includes:
- new media (including computer-based design)
- photography
- painting, drawing and sculpture
- illustration
- student exhibitions
Opening hours
The gallery is open Monday to Saturday from 10am–4pm.
- Closed Sundays and public holidays
- Open to the public, admission free
- Access is available for people with disabilities
- School and community groups are most welcome
University art and sculpture collection
The University is establishing a collection of contemporary Australian art and many of these works can be viewed throughout the University campus. Through generous donations, the University now holds one of the most significant public collections of Western and Central Desert Australian Aboriginal Art on the Sunshine Coast. Many of these works can be viewed in the lower level of the Library or the foyer area of the Accelerator at the Innovation Centre.
Limited edition prints of John Coburn's 'Sunshine Coast' are currently available for purchase.
Volunteers and friends
Volunteer work can be an opportunity to gain an understanding of how the Gallery operates and is a great way to meet others with an interest in art. It can also provide experience in curatorial practice and is a chance to keep up-to-date with current exhibitions and events.
Benefits include:
- invitations to exhibition openings and events
- volunteer talks and morning teas
- meeting visiting artists
- inclusion on the Gallery's mailing list
The Friends of the Gallery is a group formed to raise money and awareness of gallery projects and events. It works in association with the University Foundation. Contact the Gallery for more information on becoming a friend, or to join the Gallery mailing list.
