Appendix: Background

General

The University of the Sunshine Coast has been the result of the clearly established regional need for wide range supporting industry and appropriate facilities which was identified by the State and Commonwealth Governments. 1996 saw the first intake of students on site.

The University provides for the general education needs for the region bounded by Gympie to the north, Caboolture to the south, and Kilcoy to the west, and has also provided educational programs in specialist areas for state-wide, interstate and international students. The original planning was for face-to-face teaching, however more flexible and ‘open' modes of instruction, including electronic linkages within the University, and ‘distance education' continues to be explored. Vacation-time courses are also becoming more popular as the campus location is within one of the premier holiday destinations in the country.

Phases of building 1 to 4 are designed to provide the basic infrastructure and accommodation for the academic teaching and services to provide a range of planned University academic programs, administrative- services, and human resource management necessary to ensure the appropriate level of support for the programs offered, for the students and the staff.

The University, has developed successive Building Briefs for each stage of building and provided guidance for long-term planning for the campus on the basis of required areas related to student enrolment. In reviewing the national statistics and patterns, the University identified at an early stage that in the long-term, approximately twelve square metres per effective full-time student is required in plant and facilities, and this Master Plan continues to be based upon this figure. However, though these figures can be used for general planning, each building has a specific brief with appropriate areas determined by the specific usage.
