Signs

Introduction

The same signing requirements that are found at airports or hospitals can be found at universities also: a large and ever changing population of users attempting to navigate a large and diverse institution. Fortunately the time pressures that are paramount at airports and hospitals rarely exist in universities, and the nature of any campus is that there are several ways to a destination, only one of which is direct. For these reasons signing of wayfinding and facilities at universities, while important, sometimes is required to be compromised in order to preserve other physical or social benefits.

Sign strategy

The University presently has a number of sign guidelines but no Signs Master Plan, as this is currently in development. It is anticipated that the changes that may be introduced as a result of the Signs Master Plan are more likely to impact on that pool of signs relating to wayfinding rather than, say, room names. Until the Signs Master Plan becomes available this Campus Master Plan incorporates the existing sign standards.
