Overview

The University has a duty to provide, as far as is reasonable, a safe and comfortable environment for employees and students and a safe environment for wildlife on campus. This policy aims to minimise the harmful effects of passive smoking and its related discomfort to others and to ensure a safe and healthy working environment.

Policy

1. Definitions

A building is a fixed roofed structure.

A vehicle has the meaning given by the Transport Operation (Road Use Management) Act 1995 and includes any vessel.

2. Smoking is prohibited:
(a) in all buildings operated by the University of the Sunshine Coast
(b) within ten (10) metres of any such building
(c) in any signed non-smoking area and
(c) within any University vehicle

3. Under the University's Land Rules it is an offence for a person to leave on University premises litter of any kind, except in a receptacle provided for the purpose, and accordingly permanently fixed ashtrays will be provided at the edge of exclusion zones for the disposal of cigarette butts.

4. This policy extends to special purpose vehicles as well as University general vehicles.

5. Failure to comply with this Policy will be dealt with in accordance with the Student Conduct and Discipline Policy, or the provisions of the Certified Agreement, or the Land, Traffic and Parking Rules, as appropriate.
