Overview

The achievement of the University's mission depends on the performance and contribution of all staff. The University acknowledges that its most important resources are its staff and the knowledge, skills and values they bring to their work.

Performance is determined by a staff member's capacity and conduct to fulfil the requirements of the position. A staff member must have the necessary skills, knowledge, experience and qualifications to do the job and be prepared to behave in an appropriate manner - to follow instructions, not intentionally harm the business of the University and use skill and care while working and in accordance with the University's Code of conduct.

Policy

The University provides a comprehensive performance management scheme, which is fair and transparent, to support and promote good performance while dealing fairly with unsatisfactory performance. The performance management scheme comprises several key elements including probation, performance planning and review, staff development, rewarding good performance, dealing with unsatisfactory performance, serious misconduct and managing ill-health. This policy also supports the Code of Conduct and outlines consequences for breaches of the Code of Conduct.

The performance management scheme aims to:

  • optimise the performance of individual staff and the University
  • align the work of individual staff with the strategic objectives of the University
  • reward excellence, and
  • manage unsatisfactory performance, serious misconduct and ill-health effectively.

The University is committed to supporting supervisors in the effective management of their staff and to foster a positive environment that is conducive to high levels of performance and engagement.
