Profile

Dr Lucinda Aberdeen is a sociologist with a keen interest in social justice. She gained her doctorate in sociology addressing racism and the role of the Australian state at La Trobe University where she taught sociology and cultural anthropology from 1986 to 1996. Prior to that Lucinda held a number of government research positions as a sociologist. During this time she gained her coursework Masters degree studying ageing and social stratification.

Lucinda has many years experience as a social researcher working in local, state and federal government settings investigating human rights, racism in regional Australia, disability and policy evaluation as well as social and environmental impact assessment of roads, road planning, and road accident research in multi-disciplinary settings.

Research grants
  • Enhancing heritage interpretation at Fraser Island. Aberdeen L, Carter J, Hollinsworth D. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Internal Research Grants Scheme: Regional Research, 2005-6. This research will investigate existing heritage interpretation on Fraser Island, a site inscribed on the world heritage register, and identify absences and potentials for indigenous heritage interpretation that can help to inform future partnerships with indigenous groups at Fraser Island in heritage interpretation.
  • Teaching Social Research in Australian Universities in the Twenty First Century: The Challenges and Opportunities. Aberdeen, L. University of the Sunshine Coast Teaching Research and Development Grant 2004-5. This research investigated the pedagogical, institutional and cultural issues faced by university academics teaching undergraduate level social research in Australian universities.
  • Kulini Kulini Bush Camp Documentation Post Production Project. Aberdeen, L, Conboy, N, Kill, E. and Murrell, A. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Learning and Teaching Development Grant 2003-2005. The project produced a learning and teaching resource in the form of a digital documentary about the successful campaign of the Kupa Piti Kungka Tjuta, the Council of Senior Aboriginal Women, against a proposed national nuclear waste facility in the central desert in South Australia's northern region.
