Profile

Associate Professor John Sands has extensive academic and industry experience. Prior to his appointment as Program Leader, Accounting in January 2008, John was a senior lecturer at Griffith University. He held many committee and administrative positions during his 18 years with Griffith University, including Deputy Head of School of Accounting, Banking and Finance.

Before academia, John was employed in managerial positions in the banking, finance and insurance sector by multinational and private companies.

He has taught across a wide range of accounting topics since joining academia. His research has been broad, ranging from accounting education and ethics in accounting issues through to behavioural and international accounting issues. Research outcomes from these studies have been cited by various authors in refereed journals. Also, a conference paper that presented a structural equation model of the relationships between risk management, ethical environment, internal audit activity and accounting control procedural quality was awarded best paper (quantitative category) at an international conference in 2007.

Currently, John is investigating the relationship between successful management of stakeholders’ interests and corporate sustainability, which includes the use of social and environmental accounting (triple bottom line) within performance reporting.
