Regional Sustainability Research Group

Fraser Island beaches provide research opportunies

Establishment

The Regional Sustainability Research Group was formalised as one of the University of the Sunshine Coast’s flagship research concentrations in mid-2007. The group adopts a transdisciplinary and multi-method approach to focus on sustainable communities and sustainable environments, and the institutions that relate to them.

Focus

The research focus is based on dominant and emerging theoretical discourses in sustainability and regional engagement (eg sustainability science, resilience, adaptive capacity, social learning, social and human capital, regional development theory), and is applied to issues of coastal management, climate change, water management, natural and cultural heritage, innovation, adaptive growth, and community wellbeing (recognised as significant at local through to international scales) - in this way the research concentration addresses real on-the-ground concerns of society and the environment.

Researchers

The research concentration has over 20 researchers with past, current and proposed research that directly addresses USC’s focus on both regional engagement and sustainability. Researchers in the Regional Sustainability Research Group include higher degree by research (HDR) students, and early career and established academics from all three USC Faculties.
