Establishment

The Sustainability Research Centre was formalised as one of the University of the Sunshine Coast’s research concentrations in mid-2007. The Centre is transdisciplinary with a focus on sustainable communities and sustainable environments, and the institutions that relate to them. We are committed to research that supports the transformation of society towards sustainability.

Research focus

We address concerns of society and the environment through research into key sustainability issues. Our research focus is based on dominant and emerging theoretical discourses in sustainability and regional engagement. These include, but are not limited to:

  • sustainability science
  • resilience
  • adaptive capacity
  • adaptive management
  • social learning
  • social and human capital
  • regional development theory

Examples of our issues of focus include coastal management, climate change, water management, natural and cultural heritage, innovation, adaptive growth, and community wellbeing (recognised as significant at local through to international scales).

Our researchers

Our research concentration has over 35 researchers with research projects that directly address USC’s focus on both regional engagement and sustainability. Researchers in the Sustainability Research Centre include higher degree by research (HDR) students, and early career and established academics from three USC faculties.

New program

Enrolments are now open for the Graduate Certificate in Sustainability available via internal and external modes.
