Profile

Dr Peter Dunn has a track record in mathematical statistics developed during more than 15 years working in academia. He has broad expertise in the application of statistics to a variety of applications, including publications in the areas of health, ecology, and agriculture. He was previously employed by the Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries, where he gained extensive experience in the practical use of statistics.

Dr Dunn has a strong background in mathematical statistics, and especially generalized linear models. He is a world leader in research to understand Tweedie class of distributions, where his research has developed methods for accurate numerical evaluation of the densities of the Tweedie distributions. These methods are implemented in a unique package (called tweedie) available for the R statistical environment <www.R-project.org>. He has presented numerous conference papers (winning a prize at the 16th International Workshop on Statistical Modelling in Odense, Denmark in 2001; and the EJ Pitman Prize at the Australian Statistics Conference in 2002) and has broad experience in the application of statistics in applied settings.

Dr Dunn has been invited to give presentations on the R statistical environment at conferences and workshops (most recently at the Australian Statistics Conference in 2008), and is currently preparing a book for publication by Springer on the use of R for generalized linear models.

Before completing his PhD in mathematical statistics at the University of Queensland, Dr Dunn worked at the Agricultural Production Systems Research Unit (APSRU) in the Queensland Department of Primary Industries as a climate scientist. He then lectured statistics and mathematics in the Department of Mathematics and Computing at the University of Southern Queensland prior to joining the Faculty of Science, Health and Education at USC.

He is a member of the Statistical Society of Australia Inc, and the Australian Mathematics Society.
