Profile

Elizabeth (Lisa) Ryan is an Associate Lecturer in sustainability education in the Faculty of Science, Health and Education at the University of the Sunshine Coast. She is also a steering member of the Sunshine Coast hub for the Queensland Environmentally Sustainable Schools Initiative.

Lisa has been employed previously as a community development adviser in East Timor, where she worked with the community in a successful capacity building eco-tourism project and as a researcher for the Australian Research Institute in Education for Sustainability (ARIES) at Macquarie University, Sydney where she was involved in research projects examining mainstreaming teacher education for sustainability through models of professional development.

Originally a primary school teacher, Lisa has many years experience teaching in an international context having taught for some years in Kenya and East Timor. She is passionate about the role of education in building a sustainable society especially in the developing world.

Research grants
  • Investigating Queensland Educating for Sustainability in Teacher education (iQuEST), Ms Lisa Ryan (University of the Sunshine Coast) and Dr Julie Davis (Queensland University of Technology), Australian Government Department of Environment and Water Resources, Dec 2007-Dec 2008. 

This project will encompass a Queensland-based participatory action research approach with an aim of mainstreaming environmental education for sustainability within pre-service teacher education courses through a systemic approach to change to improve opportunities for trainee teachers to develop knowledge and competence in this area.
