Profile

Dr Rebecca Mellifont's interests have developed from research into comparative anatomy during her PhD. Following her PhD, Dr Mellifont spent a post-doctoral year in Cape Town at the Sport Science Institute of South Africa, managing the Biomechanics Laboratory and conducting various biomechanical projects using a 3D Vicon Motion Analysis system. Dr Mellifont's research interests lie in the study of the biomechanics and three-dimensional analysis of many sport applications, including swimming technique (and race analysis) and gait analysis. Dr Mellifont is further developing a research program to investigate further the role of balance and strength in the gait of older Sunshine Coast residents and their relationship to falls (and fall prevention).

In addition, Dr Mellifont is also interested in the scholarship of teaching and investigating the challenges placed before first year university students when coming to learn at university. A study is currently being conducted with the help of the first year anatomy and physiology students to investigate this further.

Dr Mellifont is also a consultant biomechanist and sport scientist for the Australian Paralympic Swim Team.
