Profile

Dr Fraser Russell obtained his PhD from the Department of Pharmacology, University of Melbourne (1994), where he investigated regulation of β-adrenoceptors in heart.

He completed a successful post-doctoral study in the Clinical Pharmacology Unit, working with Dr Anthony Davenport at the University of Cambridge, UK (1994-1998), investigating mechanisms involved in the transport of the cardioactive peptide endothelin-1 in endothelial cells. In a second post-doctoral appointment, Dr Russell worked with Associate Professor Ian McLennan, examining neuronal transport of the trophic factor, GDNF within the Department of Anatomy and Structural Biology, University of Otago, New Zealand.

He returned to Australia in 2000 to take a Research Fellow position in the Department of Medicine, University of Queensland. Here Dr Russell continued his interests in cardiovascular pharmacology, identifying cardiostimulant effects of urotensin-II in human heart and the association of increased circulating levels of urotensin-II in patients with end-stage heart failure.

In 2005, Dr Russell commenced his appointment of Lecturer in Biochemical Pharmacology at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Cardiovascular interests continue, with studies investigating signalling pathways in peripheral arterial disease.
