AVCC Leadership Program

To enhance my professional skills I was provided given the opportunity to attend the Australia Vice-Chancellors Committee (AVCC) Leadership Development Program for middle managers as part of HR's Leadership Development Initiative.

During the five-day intensive program, I had the opportunity to develop a network of colleagues from universities throughout Australia and attend a site visit at the Deakin University, Geelong Campus.

My goals were to learn as much as I could about leadership to achieve a higher level of management skills for the University and to share and develop with my team in the Reprographics and Registry Department.

The course covered a range of topics facilitated by Julie Warnock, beginning with a two-day workshop on:

  • creating and maintaining effective teams
  • emotional intelligence in teamwork
  • assertion

and managing difference and conflict in teams. Followed by a three-day course on:

  • leadership styles
  • leading through constant change
  • completing case studies.

The program provided motivation, reassurances in my current management skills, but also provided invaluable knowledge to assist in providing high quality services for the University, staff and clients of the University, and to continue to develop the high quality team in Reprographics and Registry in an efficient and effective environment.

One of many highlights for me was learning how to adapt to change and growth and to provide understanding with staff in change management, setting visions, guidelines, communicating and guidance.

I recommend the leadership course to all managers to assist in the continued growth of the University.
