Dilli Village reopens
1 October, 2004
Dilli Village, located on Fraser Island, is again open to the public.
After extensive negotiation with the Environmental Protection Agency, the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) has signed a 15-year lease to provide an environmental education camp that will double as a public campsite.
Dilli Village is now an environmental education camp for secondary and tertiary students, located among sand dunes just 400 metres from the beach.
It provides an eco-edu-tourism experience for island visitors, and study groups with environmental interests in the region are encouraged to use the site.
Families and day visitors are also welcome.
The University is working closely with Education Queensland to develop study packages for school groups, which will include basic scientific laboratories, mini theatrettes and interpretation facilities.
The site includes five self-contained cabins (sleeping four-five), 20 bunk-style dormitory rooms (sleeping two each) with a grassed and dingo fenced campsite.
The original cabins and bunk-rooms have had extensive makeovers, including repainting, new roofs and foundations, new beds and mattresses and all new kitchen appliances.
The University is also investigating the replacement of the diesel generators currently on site with new solar dish technology.
The University has been keen to keep the original image and 'feel' of the site intact.
Study groups of up to 50 people can be catered for, though later in 2005 the University expects to increase this capacity to 100 with the building of a new ablutions block and an increase in the dining hall capacity.
Working in partnership with Kingfisher Bay Resort and Village, the University is able to cater for large groups and deliver tailored study tour packages.
