Student exhibition opens at Bribie Island Community Arts Centre
8 September, 2004
An exhibition featuring the work of Computer-Based Art and
Design students from the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC)
will go on display at the Bribie Island Community Arts Centre,
Sunderland Drive Banksia Beach, from September 18 to October 6.
The innovative exhibition is a collaborative between the
University of the Sunshine Coast and Caboolture Shire Council.
The Zenith exhibition explores how technological change is a
constant feature in computer-based art and design and reflects both
the positive and negative outcomes of contemporary and future
society.
The large format prints reflect the unique characteristics of
digital imaging as well as advancements in technology as part of
our cultural identity.
USC Computer Art and Design Lecturer, Debra Livingston,
encouraged students to research a particular area of technology and
culture that interested them and then create a concept through
visual observation, creative experimentation, intuitive judgement
and day-to-day experience about the world to which they
respond.
"Zenith explores the relationship between the human condition
and the way technology now shapes our lives," Ms Livingston
said.
Issues such as robotics, bio-engineering, the Internet,
consumerism, the effects smart pills have on human behaviour, skin
as a fashion commodity, artificial intelligence and technology, and
animation are all explored in this thought-provoking and at times
confronting exhibition.
"Students have used photography, digital and traditional drawing
applications, and computer manipulation software to produce an
innovative exhibition of a professional standard."
The exhibition also features works by Sunshine Coast local Paul
Brown, a professional artist and writer who has specialised in art
and technology for 30 years.
"Paul's work will contrast the master and the student and he
will be giving an exhibition narrative on opening night," Ms
Livingston said.
Ms Livingston will also be exhibiting one of her works in the
exhibition to show the lecturer's work alongside the students'
work.
"The students will be showing their journals to communicate to
the public the process of how they made their images and where they
drew their inspiration from," she said.
"This exhibition features the very best of the University of the
Sunshine Coast's emerging artists," Ms Livingston said.
