Project offers opportunities to students
23 September, 2005
Taraneh Koklary and Shano Ali gave up their September school
holidays to study intensive English through the University's
English Language Program.
The Yeronga State High School Year 11 students arrived in
Australia in 2004 as part of the Humanitarian Program for
Refugees.
Taraneh and her family fled from Iran and Shano's family fled
from Kurdistan in Iraq.
Both students hope to begin studying at university in 2007.
During the short time they have been living in Australia, both
Taraneh and Shano have gained a high degree of fluency in oral
English and they welcomed the opportunity to fast track their
language skills.
Being at the University of the Sunshine Coast for the September
holidays gave them a taste for university life that they'll take
back to school and share with their friends.
The project is an initiative of the Sunshine Coast branch of the
Australian Federation of University Women Queensland (AFUW) whose
members are working to assist young refugee women to achieve their
full educational potential.
