University to celebrate Occupational Therapy Week
The University of the Sunshine Coast will join the Sunshine Coast Regional Occupational Therapy Group in celebrating OT Week 2007 on Wednesday 24 October.
USC, which is launching a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy next year, will hold a special OT presentation for prospective students, career counsellors and the public from 11am to 1pm at the University’s new Chancellery Building (Building C).
This presentation will feature equipment displays, splinting demonstrations and a discussion of the new degree program by Occupational Therapy lecturer Craig Greber.
Mr Greber said experienced occupational therapists would be on hand to answer questions about employment opportunities for graduates.
“This is an exciting new program that will meet the local need for occupational therapy by preparing students thoroughly for the professional duties they will fulfill,” he said.
“This program will produce graduates eligible for registration as occupational therapists in Australia and overseas.”
Mr Greber said the word “occupational” did not just refer to paid work.
“It means all the things we do in our lives to keep us ‘occupied’,” he said. “As well as focusing on helping clients become more able in important aspects of their lives, we also use those everyday activities as a way of providing therapy.”
He said OT students would gain expertise in analysing and understanding barriers to people’s everyday functioning, as well as in specific therapeutic strategies used to overcome them.”
