Pat Rafter inducted into Sports Hall of Fame

Former World Number 1 tennis champion Pat Rafter was inducted into the Sunshine Coast Sports Hall of Fame at a ceremony at the University of the Sunshine Coast last night.

Rafter, whose career highlights included back-to-back US Open titles in 1997 and 1998 and being runner-up at Wimbledon in 2000 and 2001, spoke about his tennis career and his strong attachment to the Sunshine Coast.

Australian Surf Life Saving President Ron Rankin of the Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club received a Certificate of Merit for his services to sports administration and coaching.

The Hall of Fame ceremony was held at USC’s new Chancellery building and marked the 10th year of the awards being based at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

More than 100 guests attended, including past Sports Hall of Fame inductees, their friends and family members, event sponsors and business and civic leaders.

Compere for the event was USC sport scientist and Hall of Fame inductee Dr Brendan Burkett, and Seven Local News sports presenter Yvonne Sampson conducted short interviews with many of the past inductees or their relatives.
