Step in the right direction for students with a disability
The University of the Sunshine Coast has taken an innovative step towards securing employment for its graduating students who have a disability.
USC has joined forces with STEPS Disability Queensland in a $30,000 pilot program, funded by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, which began this week.
STEPS project officer Narelle Jones said the program would continue until June 2008 and would benefit graduating students as well as potential employers.
“This is a new experience for STEPS, as our current employment program does not have a large focus on working with graduates,” she said.
“The program will consist of an assessment of employment goals, breaking down barriers with employers, working around the graduates’ needs and learning about the individual people.”
The program’s goal is to register at least 15 people by 29 October, then offer them assistance in resume writing and interview preparation, and to advise them of suitable job vacancies.
USC Careers and Graduate Employment Officer Anne Bowden said working with STEPS Disability was a great opportunity for the University.
“It is really good to work with an organisation like STEPS Disability to get the word out there about the positives of hiring a person with a disability,” she said.
Ms Jones spent two days at USC this week and will return on Wednesday 24 October from 10am to speak with more students with disabilities.
Those seeking more information or to register for the program can contact STEPS on 5458 3000 or visit <www.steps.net.au>.
