The University of the Sunshine Coast yesterday threw a farewell party for 20 State University of New York (SUNY) teaching students who completed an intensive 16-week Study Abroad program on the Coast.

This program is run by USC in partnership with Education Queensland (Sunshine Coast North District Schools) and has provided the American students with work placements at seven local State schools this term.

The schools involved were Chancellor State College, Chevallum State School, Currimundi Special School, Kawana Waters State College, Mountain Creek State School, Mountain Creek State High School and Maroochydore State High School.

USC yesterday held a farewell function for the students, their school supervisors and principals and USC teaching staff at the University’s Gallery.

Sunshine Coast North District Schools Executive Director Suzanne Innes and USC’s Dean of Science Professor Rod Simpson addressed the function before each of the teaching students spoke positively about their experiences on the Sunshine Coast.

Sixty SUNY students have completed the Study Abroad program through USC and Education Queensland in the past four years.

Mountain Creek State School principal Glenn McGowan said his school had been involved in the program since its inception and this year had provided placements for three SUNY student teachers.

Chevallum State School principal Lyn Winch said she and her staff were so happy with the two student teachers at their school this year that she would have no hesitation in offering placements in future.
