USC gets on board for school surfing project

USC lecturer Uwe Terton teaches Our Lady of the Rosary student Roland about film editing

The University of the Sunshine Coast has provided technical support and instruction for a primary school movie-making project that involves students surfing waves as well as the internet.

About 40 Year 5 students from several Sunshine Coast Catholic primary schools took part in a special movie editing training day at USC today to produce video clips for Our Lady of the Rosary School’s Surf’s Up website.

USC computer-based art and design lecturer Uwe Terton said the primary students learned how to edit video footage of their classmates competing in recent surfing competitions for an online movie and art exhibition.

Mr Terton said two school teachers and a USC computer-based art and design student helped him instruct the Year 5s in a training session that could well spark their passion for video editing, film direction or journalism.

“I had never taught primary school children before, so it was an interesting process of simplifying the content and bringing it across so the students could understand it,” he said.

Mr Terton said the University was likely to take greater involvement in the project next year, helping students edit videos both at the University and on location at the surfing contests.
