Enabling courses help Amy excel at USC
Biomedical Science student Amy Turco, 23, is excelling in her studies at the University of the Sunshine Coast thanks to USC’s optional enabling courses.
Amy last year achieved high distinctions in her first-year subjects of Physics and Chemistry and believes the Tertiary Enabling Program (TEP) courses she completed played a big role in her academic success.
It’s no surprise that she has signed up to do a further enabling course in maths this semester.
“Because I was enrolled in those TEP courses, I received extra help and extra information,” she said. “They are entirely worthwhile and an absolute benefit for your studies.
“My results are a clear indication that I took part in those TEP courses. It just prepares you for everything in the subject, as well as the exams.”
The University this year has TEP courses in Writing Skills, Computer Literacy, Chemistry, General Mathematics, Mathematics for Physics, Statistics and Biology, with classes starting on Monday 4 February.
The courses are offered free of charge to Commonwealth-supported students before the start of each semester and as weekly tutorials throughout the teaching year.
Tertiary Enabling Program coordinator Scott Roche said hundreds of USC students benefitted from doing TEP courses last year.
Mr Roche said undergraduate students could learn new skills, refresh their knowledge and increase their potential for excellent results.
“Enabling courses are definitely linked to higher levels of achievement,” he said. “Students who undertake enabling courses tend to get better results in their first-year courses than those students who don’t.”
