Exciting battle for Great Court Race honours
Only a split second separated first and second in both the male and female events of the Great Court Race at the University of the Sunshine Coast yesterday (Wednesday 20 February).
Matt Osberger of Maleny edged out Eric Stroh of Minnesota, United States, with a desperate lunge for the finish line in an exciting 400m dash around the University campus. Eric Juven, also of Minnesota, finished third.
Emma Cooper of Armidale claimed the female crown over bare-footed runner Jacqui Scriven of Buderim in an equally-close finish. German student Susanne Koll finished third.
Emma and Matt received $125 in prizemoney and were presented with the Dean van der Helm Memorial Shield by Dean’s mother Roslyn and stepfather Ken Dalgleish.
The second and third place-getters in both the male and female events received $75 and $50 respectively.
A big crowd of first-year students turned out to watch the event, which is an annual highlight of Orientation Week and to enjoy free pizza for lunch afterwards.
The University will continue its Orientation activities today, with plenty of academic and social activities on the agenda. These include information sessions and a free barbecue lunch.
New Students also can sign up for bus trips to nearby tourism attractions like Australia Zoo today and Wet ’n’ Wild tomorrow and a social weekend camp on Fraser Island.
