Three exhibitions to open at USC Gallery
Three exciting new exhibitions — Memento, Place = Space + Meaning, and Come this way . . . — will open at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery on Thursday 8 May from 6pm.
Memento is a touring exhibition of prize-winning souvenirs that have been finalists of the Memento Australia Awards over the past eight years. The national organisation was set up to address a shortage of quality, locally-made souvenirs, gifts and mementos.
Winning designers of the Memento Australia Awards followed strict criteria including presenting small, robust examples that could fit into a suitcase, maintain consistent high quality and represent Australian culture.
The Place = Space + Meaning exhibition also has a tourism theme.
USC’s Tourism program leader Dr David Foster said the exhibition featured some post-graduate research by Faculty of Business students and staff.
“This research reflects the fact that the essence of tourism is the enjoyment of place and what it has to offer to both host and visitor," he said.
The third exhibition, Come this way …, is a photographic exhibition of ephemeral art made by young children at Burnside State School. This school has embarked on an exciting teaching process based on the work of British artist Andy Goldsworthy.
University of the Sunshine Coast Curator Dawn Oelrich said the unusual but eclectic set of exhibitions would appeal to many visitors, particularly those interested in tourism. The exhibitions will remain on display until 7 June.
The USC Gallery, located at the University campus on Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs, is open free to the public from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday. The Gallery is closed Sundays and public holidays.
The 2008 USC Gallery Exhibition Program is proudly supported by major sponsor Coastline BMW.
