USC to welcome largest intake of students

USC will welcome more than 2000 new students this week

19 February 2008

The University of the Sunshine Coast will today officially welcome its largest group of new students to the start of the 2008 university year.

USC’s intake of 2279 new students is 11 percent higher than last year, bringing the University’s total student population to well over 5000.

More than 1000 students are expected to attend today’s Official Welcome ceremony at 11.30am, as well as a range of academic and social activities throughout Orientation Week.

These include information sessions, campus tours, free barbecue lunches, fun and games, bus trips to tourism attractions and a social weekend camp on Fraser Island.

University Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Thomas AM said the Orientation program had been designed to ensure all new students made a smooth transition into university.

“University is still the most powerful passport to long-term career success,’’ he said. “I wish every commencing students success and happiness as they embark on an experience in social and academic learning that will endure for a lifetime.”

Professor Thomas said USC offered plenty of academic opportunities, work experience, and social or sporting activities and he encouraged new students to get involved.

“The impact of a university education can be profound for those prepared to give, as well as receive, and participate fully in the university experience,” he said.

New students are in for a treat today with live entertainment from 10.30am to 3pm. Performers will include Hip Hop dance crew Fresh Elements, beatbox master Dr Rhythm, DJ Corey, Raw Monkey, Adrian Ross and the Gubbi Gubbi Dance Troupe.

And tomorrow, first-year students will line up for the annual Great Court Race from 12.30pm. This is a serious event for serious runners, with prizemoney up for grabs for the top place-getters.
