USC exercise physiologist joins national board

Dr Chris Askew

30 July 2008

University of the Sunshine Coast exercise physiologist Dr Chris Askew has been appointed to the national board of the Australian Association for Exercise and Sports Science (AAESS).

The AAESS is a professional organisation which helps establish, promote and defend the career paths of tertiary-trained exercise and sports science practitioners.

Its 7,000 members include specialists in exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor control, and exercise and sport psychology.

Dr Askew’s role on the board will involve boosting the association’s membership and ensuring that the needs of members are met.

“The association represents all areas of sport and exercise science, from grass roots sports science to clinical exercise science,” he said.

“As a member of the board I will contribute to the strategic direction of the association and a key goal is to represent the broad professional interests of the members.

“That will range from lobbying governments for new rights for members, and working with the AAESS executive office to provide members with access to professional resources and continuing education opportunities.

“I will have primary responsibility for making sure the key performance indicators for membership are met by the board.

Dr Askew said he was looking forward to working on the board with AAESS president, Associate Professor Jeff Coombes of the University of Queensland, and with colleagues from interstate.

He said he believed his appointment was a great opportunity to give back to the profession in a variety of ways.

“One of the things I’d really like to do is establish a student association under the banner of AAESS,” he said. “This would foster a sense of belonging to the association, so that students develop a bond that lasts them through the life of their professional careers.”
