Cheetah conservation lecture open to public

27 June 2008

A South African expert on cheetahs will speak at the University of the Sunshine Coast on Tuesday 1 July at 7pm in a public lecture organised by Australia Zoo.

Annie Beckhelling of Cheetah Outreach will discuss cheetah numbers in southern Africa and the threats facing the animals.

Ms Beckhelling also will outline what her organisation is doing to help protect cheetahs in terms of public awareness, education, non-lethal predator control and relocation.

The public lecture in USC’s Lecture Theatre 1 has been organised by Australia Zoo as part of its Cheetah Week from 30 June to 6 July. Entry is by gold coin donation.

The University also has other activities on during the school holidays.

On Tuesday 1 July, the University will offer free campus tours from 9–10.30am or 11am–12.30pm.

These have been organised to give prospective students an opportunity to view the University’s state-of-the-art facilities and meet its friendly staff.

Student ambassadors will lead the tours and will happily answer questions about university life. For more information, contact Tegan Piggford on 5459 4795.

Also, an exhibition of work by USC design students will feature in the USC Gallery from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday during the first week of the school holidays.

The exhibition, “inSIGHT: an exhibition of digital illustration by advanced design students”, explores technology and society in a variety of exciting and innovative ways.
