Politics student to address international conference

USC student Elyse Wohling

18 July 2008

University of the Sunshine Coast student Elyse Wohling, 20, has been selected to present a paper at the prestigious Harvard Project for Asian and International Relations (HPAIR) conference in Malaysia next month.

It is an extraordinary accomplishment for Elyse to speak alongside other distinguished speakers and future leaders from across the world at the largest annual international student conference in the Asia Pacific.

Elyse of Maroochydore is in her third year of a combined Bachelor of Business (International Business) and Bachelor of Arts (International Relations and Politics) degree.

She said she was looking forward to the conference on August 21-24 where she will discuss the Australian Government’s position on the relationship between China and Taiwan.

USC Lecturer in Politics Bronwyn Stevens said Elyse had developed outstanding research and analytical skills that complemented her excellent public speaking ability.

“It is a remarkable achievement given she is still an undergraduate, as most students presenting papers are Honours or postgraduate students,” she said.

Ms Stevens said students of politics at USC did many simulations and oral presentations to help develop their public speaking skills.

Elyse thanked USC for its role in boosting her public speaking confidence and her desire to achieve.

“I could not have done this without the amazing support of my lecturers,” she said. “I can always go and see them any time and they are always willing to make themselves available to help and support me.”
