Language studies for business and pleasure
The University of the Sunshine Coast will next month offer a variety of short-course language programs designed especially to help those who plan to travel overseas as tourists or on business.
The 10-week courses in French, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, German, Mandarin and Spanish will begin on Tuesday 5 August, with beginner's classes on Tuesdays and intermediate classes on Wednesdays.
Course organiser Gaby Ziegann said the classes were structured to ensure personal attention and to enable students to interact with native speakers, many of whom are international students at the University.
Ms Ziegann said learning another language made travelling easier and more fulfilling.
“It enables a greater appreciation and understanding of the places you will visit and it is an important skill for you and your children to have in this increasingly global world,” she said.
“Knowing another language also offers many career advantages because multilingual people are in high demand in many workplaces. It can really expand your horizons, both personally and professionally.”
Ms Ziegann said the USC language courses were fun and had a unique teaching structure.
“Weeks one, three, five, seven and nine are teaching nights with grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary building being the focus,” she said.
“Weeks two, four, six, eight and 10 are the native speaker nights when the students get to work with native speakers doing language activities.”
Students must register by Thursday 24 July. The cost of $300 includes all materials. For more details, contact Gaby Ziegann on (07) 5459 4851 or <gziegann@usc.edu.au>.
