Top maths students to compete in annual tournament
Hundreds of the highest-performing maths students from schools across the Coast will compete in the 11th annual Sunshine Coast Maths Tournament tomorrow (Tuesday 27 May).
The challenge from 9am to noon will involve 51 teams of five students putting their maths skills to the test in individual and teams events at the University of the Sunshine Coast's Innovation Centre Auditorium.
Highlights of the tournament include a fun maths relay and the presentation of medals and trophies to the winning teams by USC's Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill.
Organiser Bill Holland said teams from as far as Bribie Island to Sunshine Beach would take part in the event which had a strong emphasis on promoting maths as fun.
“The goal is to give students the opportunity to display their skills in mathematics and to mix with like-minded students,” Mr Holland said.
He said the teams had trained hard for the tournament and the competition would be friendly but fierce.
