USC to host International Nurses Day celebration
The history and future of nursing will go on display together at an exciting and interactive celebration of International Nurses Day at the University of the Sunshine Coast from 1-5pm on Monday 12 May.
Past, present and prospective nurses from across the region have been invited to attend USC’s event called “In My Day: Celebrating International Nurses Day”.
The celebration will feature activities for school students, the nursing community and the general community, including tours of USC’s state-of-the-art teaching facilities, study and careers advice, and displays of nursing memorabilia.
Those attending also will have the opportunity to take part in video interviews – to record their memories and aspirations about nursing – and read some personal histories of Coast nurses.
Nursing historian and author Dr Judith Godden of the University of Sydney will make a special presentation from 3-4pm that will highlight Florence Nightingale’s influence on Australian nursing.
Dr Godden will outline the challenges faced by nursing pioneer Lucy Osburn, who led the first nursing teams sent by the Nightingale Fund Council to Australia in 1868.
The final session of the celebration will focus on nursing careers, with USC staff on hand to discuss study and career opportunities, nursing specialisations in midwifery and mental health, and postgraduate programs for professional development.
