Winning illustrator’s exhibition at USC Gallery

The Arrival by Shaun Tan

21 June 2007

An exhibition called “Picture-smith: paintings and illustrations by Shaun Tan” will open at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery on Thursday 5 July.

The exhibition will feature illustrations, paintings, prints and books by Shaun Tan of Melbourne, whose wordless graphic novel, The Arrival, has now won a string of national and international awards.

Mr Tan will attend the official opening at 6pm at which USC Associate Professor in Creative Writing and renowned children’s author Dr Gary Crew will be the guest speaker.

The Arrival recently won the Australian Publishers' Association Best-Designed Children's Illustrated Book, an Honourable Mention at the Bologna Ragazzi Awards in Italy, and the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards Book of the Year.

USC Gallery Curator Dawn Oelrich said the exhibition would include illustrations from The Arrival along with other work that many people will recognise.

“We will have illustrations and prints of numerous books of Shaun’s plus some from collaborative works such as Memorial by Gary Crew,” she said.

“The exhibition investigates the relationships between words and illustration and meaning – about finding meaning with or without text – or when the illustration becomes text.”

The exhibition will remain on display at the gallery until Saturday 11 August. Mr Tan will return to USC in October to be guest author in residence at the University.

The USC Gallery, located at the University campus on Sippy Downs Drive, Sippy Downs, is open to the public from 10am to 4pm Monday to Saturday. The Gallery is closed Sundays and public holidays.

The 2007 USC Gallery Exhibition Program is proudly supported by Sajen Legal.
